Integrative Yoga Psychotherapy

at The Open Practice Basingstoke

Integrative yoga psychotherapy (IYP) brings together psychotherapy, somatic awareness, and yoga-based practices to support emotional healing, nervous system regulation, and a more connected relationship with the self. This approach recognises that many of our difficulties are not just held in the mind, but in our whole system.

Bringing together different psychotherapeutic models such as Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Somatic Psychotherapy, IYP works with you as a whole. It is a gentle, trauma-informed approach that supports change by helping the body feel safer, more regulated, and more present and using this safe container to then explore past and present moment experiences. As we now believe that trauma is held in the body and pain is experienced in the brain having an approach that brings together the body and the mind can be very powerful.

How This Work Helps

Many people come to this work feeling disconnected from themselves, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand. You might say things like “I don’t know who I am anymore,” “My body doesn’t feel safe,” or “I’ve tried talking about it, but something is still missing.” Or perhaps you are experiencing pain, fatigue or sleep issues.

Integrative yoga psychotherapy can help by:

  • Supporting nervous system regulation and a sense of safety

  • Increasing awareness of bodily signals and emotional responses

  • Reducing overwhelm, anxiety, and chronic stress

  • Gently working with trauma held in the body

  • Supporting a clearer, more grounded sense of self

  • Developing tools for self-regulation that can be used in daily life

  • Increasing self awareness and improving self care

  • Cultivating a kinder approach to yourself and others which makes life more joyful

Sessions may include counselling, mindful movement, breath awareness, guided somatic practices, and reflective therapeutic dialogue. Everything is adapted to you - there is no requirement to be flexible, fit, or experienced in yoga. Yoga is the framework but it offers us many tools not just the poses you see on social media.

Who This Work Is For

This approach may be helpful if you:

  • Are living with the effects of trauma, stress, or emotional overwhelm

  • Experience anxiety, low mood, or a disrupted sense of self

  • Live with chronic pain or persistent physical symptoms

  • Feel disconnected from your body or struggle to rest and regulate

  • Have found that talking therapies alone haven’t fully helped

  • Want a compassionate, body-aware approach to healing

You do not need prior yoga experience, and you will never be asked to push through pain or discomfort. The work is collaborative, paced, and grounded in choice.

What Makes Integrative Yoga Psychotherapy Different

Integrative yoga psychotherapy sits at the intersection of modern psychology and ancient contemplative practices, informed by trauma theory and nervous-system science. It honours the intelligence of the body and recognises symptoms as meaningful responses rather than problems to be fixed.

My role is not to tell you who to be or how to change, but to support you in reconnecting with your own internal resources, building self-trust, and developing a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
