YOGA THERAPY
Yoga therapy is an holistic approach to health and wellbeing that combines the ancient practice of yoga with psychotherapeutic techniques and modern neuroscience. It is a discipline that focuses on the mind-body connection, aiming to promote overall well-being and address specific health concerns. In yoga therapy, the practice is tailored to the individual's unique needs and conditions, providing targeted benefits for physical ailments, mental health issues, and emotional imbalances. Through a combination of asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing exercises), mindfulness, philosophy and relaxation techniques, yoga therapy helps to empower individuals to become active participants in their own healing journey, restoring balance and a sense of wholeness.

In recent years there has been an increase in people living with long term, chronic health conditions, this number is currently more than 15.4 million in the UK. Whilst medical treatment can help, many of these conditions can also be managed and even resolved through yoga therapy.
There are now an increasing number of scientific studies that highlight the physiological benefits of yoga which include reducing stress, improving immune and digestive function, the potential to lower blood pressure for people with hypertension and promoting healthy brain changes that can help reduce anxiety, depression and PTSD.
Yoga is increasingly seen as a practice that has many health benefits, in part due to its holistic approach treating the mind and body together as one.

TVK Desikachar:
“Yoga therapy is a self-empowering process, where the care-seeker, with the help of the Yoga therapist, implements a personalised and evolving Yoga practice, that not only addresses the illness in a multi-dimensional manner, but also aims to alleviate his/her suffering in a progressive, non-invasive and complementary manner. Depending upon the nature of the illness, Yoga therapy can not only be preventative or curative, but also serve a means to manage the illness, or facilitate healing in the person at all levels.”
